I had an abortion over 40 years ago and I still have such a hard time dealing with it and the deep regret I have for making such a horrific decision. I know that God has forgiven me because I have asked him to. I just can’t forgive myself. There has never been a day that I didn’t regret it with everything in me. I have always thought that there had to be other women who were also devastated after having one. I think it is such a sad thing that it’s even available to women. I have hated myself for not considering adoption. The shame, regret, resentment for Planned Parenthood who lined us up like cattle and then sent us in one by one, who then took us to a room where we were told to lay on a cot for about 10 minutes then we were told to leave. They herded us out, again, like cattle.
Dear Patricia,
My heart goes out to you in your pain and loss. Please check out our tips and resources page for healing.
It is very common to face the problem of being unable to forgive yourself. But I want to ask you to make it a goal…and something you pray for…the grace and ability to forgive yourself. That doesn’t mean that you won’t forever recognize the wrongness of your abortion, but rather that you will look on yourself with the same compassion, empathy, and forgiving hear that God is looking on you with….just as you would have empathy for a four year old child who has just realized that she did something stupid and hurt a loved one.
Remember, guilt can be used by the Accuser, Satan, to hold us back from the healing which brings spiritual strength and the grace to be a better witness of God’s grace to others. Please read this post about this temptation to dwell in guilt and grief–even though God is calling is out of this trap.
God offered you the gift of a child. In having an abortion, you rejected that gift. But He loves you so much He is now offering you the gift of forgiveness, which requires you to imitate Him and forgive yourself, too. Don’t let the temptation to cling to guilt and grief lead you into the mistake of rejecting what God is offering you now: complete forgiveness, lightness of heart, and the joyful anticipation of being reunited with your aborted child in fullness of life everlasting.
I understand your guilt and grief. God even more than I. And that it precisely why I know that God’s prayer is for you to find greater healing and peace in your own heart.
Yes, you made a horrible mistake. But God wants to turn that tragedy into a source of grace, healing and power that will renew you, His own precious daughter, into a wiser, happier, stronger source of grace to others. It is within your reach.
You are in my prayers. Please check out our tips and resources page for healing.
