Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Research suggests that most abortions are unwanted or coerced. Forced abortions also occur, and woman and girls may face violence if they refuse to abort. In 2001, a Florida mother pleaded guilty to taking her 15-year-old daughter to an abortion clinic at gunpoint and telling staff that if her daughter did not have an abortion, “I’m going to blow her brains out.”
Similarly, in 2007 the parents of a 19-year-old Maine girl pleaded guilty after gagging and tying up their daughter and putting her in the trunk of their car to drive her for an out-of-state abortion. The teen called police after escaping from the car in New Hampshire. Police said a gun, rope, scissors and duct tape where found in the trunk of the car.
Studies of death rates among women have found that homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant women. The Elliot Institute’s special report, Forced Abortion in America, documents of cases of women and girls who were killed or assaulted for refusing to abort or because their attackers did not want the pregnancy.
South Dakota’s governor signed a law in March requiring doctors to screen women and girls for coercion before scheduling an abortion. Similar legislation, based on model legislation created by the Elliot Institute, was also passed in Nebraska in 2010.
The Center Against Forced Abortions, a project of the Justice Foundation, also provides legal assistance to teens and women facing coerced or forced abortions. For additional help, see the Help & Healing Guide.
